Writing Prompt

If you could be a movie character, who would you be? Explain why you would be that person, and define one thing about your life that you would want to change.

8th Grade Writing

-Group character

+Learning Objective: Students collaborate to form ideas and understandings about character development as well as how to show what they've learned.

=Students are being asked to come up with a way that they can prove their learning from their research on paragraph writing and run on sentences. Today they worked in groups to come up with possible ways of achieving this task.


9th Grade English

-Final revision day in the lab
These 5 things are due at final submission:

-Final Draft
-Typed rough draft
-Written Rough Draft
-The Necklace notes
-Annotated Flash Fiction from the web

=Students are finishing their flash fiction unit, and today is the final day to work on those projects in class.

=Students are searching magazine articles to find possible starter characters, as well as beginning to attempt writing characters into action scenes.


9th Grade English

-Today and Friday are going to be the last days of class to write this short story.

+Learning Objective: Students honestly analyze their progress, and work to finish what they are able to today.

=Students have today and Friday to work in class on completing their final draft of writing. I expect them to be realistic and responsible in assessing what needs to be done to complete that assignment.

This is your 2 weeks notice; 2 weeks until the end of the quarter. Speaking of 2 weeks notice, what job would you never want to do? Why? On the other hand, what job would you absolutely love to do? Why?
Also, what do you plan to do after you graduate from high school? Is there anything you can do while in high school to prepare for that?

8th Grade Writing

+Learning objective: Students will begin thinking of original characters, and define their unique qualities.

= Students will try to begin creating a character by finding elements of the classroom that could play into the formation of that character. For example, the American flag could be the beginning of an American soldier type of character.


9th Grade English

-Writing stages (where are you?)
-Final draft due on Friday
-Notebooks due Thursday

+Learning objective: students analyze their progress and create a plan for completion.

= This is the week that students's Flash Fan Fiction writing is due. Each student is at a different stage, so today I want students to assess where they are, and come up with a plan for how they will complete the project.

=Students are talking about what they know about creating enjoyable characters, and then listing details about a person they know, treating that person like a character.

+Learning objective: Students should discuss character traits and existing characters in an attempt to generate ideas for their own short story characters.


9th Grade English

-Mentor text decision
-Annotated copy of mentor text due Monday
=Students are looking at existing Flash Fiction and deciding which piece will best help them with their own writing. When they annotate their copy, they should make notes and highlight parts of the story that show strong examples of the style of writing they are trying to create.
