Friday, April 29

Before you begin your work today, read the plans below:
-Follow the link at the bottom of the page to a powerpoint about the 4 functions of Mythology
-Read the powerpoint
-Summarize, on a separate piece of paper, what each of the 4 functions of mythology is
-Return to this blog posting and make a comment that explains how "The Odyssey" serves at least 2 functions of mythology. In this posting you should make specific reference to the book.

If you have extra time, read back over the descriptions of each of the 4 functions of mythology. You will be having an essay quiz on Monday over books 8 and 9, and in your response you will be asked to explain part of the book according to at least 1 of the 4 functions of myth.

Here is the Link: Joseph Campbell's 4 functions

Get your work done, and be prepared. Have an awesome day, and I will see you on Monday.

  1. The Odyssey serves as the Functions Mystical and Cosmological. The reason I think this is because not only is it mostly all Myth it explains many of the beliefs of those who live in the story itself. Such as how many things came to be for them, and how everything functions due to the Gods. I also say mystical because its all myth. its basically all just a big story, for entertainment to people, while also possibly teaching life lessons and morals. Striking fear or warmth into the reader. Those are just two of the Functions I believe the Odyssey has.

  2. The Odyssey uses the functions of Mystical and Cosmological Function. One reason that It can be a Cosmological story is that the gods mostly control everything that happens. There is alot of god and mortal interaction in this book like the time that Athena made Odysseus look like a god when he was getting ready on the island of Calypso. That is how its used to explain nature. A reason that this story has a Mystical function is that brings up many mythological creatures and things such as the Cyclopes. Another example is the gods interaction with Odysseus. It brings out the awe and wonder of the universe.

  3. the odyssey is like a function of a mystical and cosmological, because how a world of imagenary things are created in this story makes the book more like creatures are made and a story of a gods. this book is just more like a story entartainment book.

  4. I think it its mystical and cosmological because its for peoples entertainment and it is basically all made up stories.

  5. The Odyssey serves as the Functions Mystical and Cosmological. I think this because Its a myth and also a belief. It also puts thoughts into peoples head. For example this story can also teach lessons and morals. The Odyssey can also be story for entertainment. Those are the two functions i believe this this story has.

  6. 1 function of mythology the odyssey has is that it makes all the characters seem to be real and are actually in real life, i say this because the book tells us in detail the backgrounds of all the people in the story and it makes us feel as though they are in real life! like it shows us what all came from them and it shows how everything in the universe was controlled by the gods.
a 2nd function of mythology is the fact that all it is, is a myth! there isn't any part of this story thats real! there are no greek gods that control everything. there aren't any magical places in the real world. this story was made up to entertain the readers. it serves as just another story for readers to have fun reading. though this story may seem like its all true, none of it really is.

  7. Out of the four functions of mythology I think that the Odyssey would be Mystical and Pedagogical. The Odyssey is a myth telling about the anger of the gods like Poseidon's anger towards Odysseus. At the same time its also Pedagogical because it was a story that was passed down by the people of Greece, where the moral is don't piss off the gods.

  8. I believe that the Odyssey has the two of the four main functions,, these would have to be Mystical. I say this because there are the Gods in the book, and some creatures that don't seem real. The second one would have to be Consnological. I say this because some gods are gods of nature, and some of the beauties of nature

  9. The Odyssey possesses the function of mystical & cosmological... For the fact that the mystical function states it reminds of how scary & miraculous the universe really is. That in'a NUTSHELL definitely defines the Odyssey, for cosmological function it says it explains something in nature. The beliefs are major in this book & are hard to miss, it is however myth & has a sole purpose of entertainment to the reader.

  10. 1. The odyssey seems to have the socialogical function included in it. First of all, the adventure of the trouble ridden odysseus was started by angering Poseidon Earthshaker by not providing a sacrafice for him when odysseus was getting ready to sail home from troy and blinding his cyclops son Polythemus. He also cursed Poseidons name when he was on his territory. All of these events led to Odysseus not being able to sail home for over 8 years. This would be a socialogical function by saying that if you anger the gods you will be punished for your actions.
    2. The odyssey also seems to have a Pedagogical function. During the 8th book, odysseus was offered to be shown what the customs were like on the island of Phaiacia. He was shown all of the dances and the festivies that were provided. Odysseus basically saw the human spirit in how to live in prosperity. It shows us how we should be joyous for any occasion. This is why it has the Pedagogical Function.

  11. The odyssey serves as the functions are mystical and pedagogical. the reason why i say that is because it expresses how odysseus goes through a long journey to get back home. They make the story seem realistic by making the charecters sound like there real and your right in the story with them. and they give a way with pedagogical is they try and show u to live a good life with good moral and not bad things.

  12. the odyssey has the functions of mystical and cosmological. mystical because of the gods and the cyclopes. cosmological because everything is happening in order and not like skipping around.

  13. The story 'The Odyssey', serves under the mythologies of mystical function and cosmological function. I think it goes under mystical considering it's about god's and how their life was. It was really really strange compared to how things are now. It seemed unreal, too. I also think it goes under cosmological because of the different types of god's that there were.

  14. The four functions of mythology each have their own traits. But the ones that tie in with the odyssey the most would have to be 1,2. Number one is the mystical functions(wonder the universe kind of thing.) The odyssey is like that because of all the gods and things. The second one was cosmological function. That is pretty much a process and the odyssey is written in a process type of way.

  15. I think out of the four functions that fit The Odyssey are mystical and sociological mystical because you don't know whats out there and it's all made up. Sociological because it goes the gods and goddesses and then demi-gods and then everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think the functions that The Odyssey has would have to be Mystical and Cosmological. Mystical, first, because of all the magical happenings in it, such as Gods, and Goddesses, and the magical places, like Hades (even though Hades is NOT a magical place I would want to go. O.O). Cosmological relates to it because it explains how things happen in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i think that the two functions of mythology that are best represented by the Odyssey is Mystical function because it uses things from the real world in a way that is unreal. also i think that the sociological function fits because it has kings and other classes that are talked about in the book

    ReplyDelete
  18. The first way that The Odyssey, supports the four functions of Mythology, is with the Mystical function. The whole point of the mystical function is to tell about the wonder and "awe-inspiringness" of the world. The Odyssey tells this with how they describe the way they see the world.

  19. Well...... The Odyssey (: basically just think its a mystical and sociological. Mystical because most of it is a based on myth and gods. Sociological; all of it comes in a social order I'm guessing everything in these books happen in order for some certain reason. Most of it is made believe, non of it is real of course.

  21. storys like the odyssey that has all the half breeds and the god/goddess are not true or most likely not proven. so how the four functions work in the story is it uses a little of both cosmological and mystical because well it is not true. in a way in the odyssey they use their own view of the world zeus is their god in sky poseidon is water and hades is hell ( it is proven that he is the guy working in hell and i do not read the bible nor will i ever). so it is in fact that the story we are currently are reading is mythological and cosmological. hades zeus and of course poseidon are made up their kids are so to finish this up they don't exist! (to me most creatures do *coughs* medusa *coughs*)

  22. In my opinion the book has a sociological function because Poseidon makes it hard for Odysseus to return. First Odysseus has to wait 8 years because he did not only curse at Poseidon while on Poseidon's ground but Poseidon also blinded Odysseus' son. Poseidon wants to show Odysseus how strong he is and how much power he's got.

The book has also a mystical function because basically nothing that is written in this book is true or comes from real life. Everything is made up and has nothing to do with the real world at all. But another reason why it is a mystical function is because it shows Odysseus how wonderful the earth is while he's going back from Troy. For instance in book eight he is at a festival and they show him everything they got.

  23. i think this story has had two major functions. i think that this story had mystical function in it because i think that most of these gods stories had had make believe in mainly all of it and also because there was a lot of mythology in this story such as cyclopse and cyberus. I also think this whole entire story has had cosmological function in it because they try to show how nature worked.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i think this story has mythology meaning because the cyclopes and Cyberus. i also thin there is a mystical function because its mainly about gods and how people believed in them. in a way i think it also has cosmological function in it because they show a lot about nature such as the winds and storms and animals. This is what i think about the story.

  26. I think the odyssey is mystical, and sociological because it is mainly a myth and it validates a social order. its a myth because of all the mythical gods and creatures in the story. It slowly shows how that some gods dont get along and which ones do get along in their social lives.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think the odysey is mystical and cosmological because the odysey is mostly a myth because of all of the mythical god and places. It is also cosmological because it explains a social order because the gods work together to make problems for odyseus or help him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. my opioin about the book i think it is mystical why well because it talks about the greek gods and it talks about how they are related and also it has the social logical in it it shows how they become friends for example odyssues became friends with the princess and she took him to her father to get help like clothes, food.

  29. The Odyssey uses the fourth function and the first (Pedagogical Function and Mystical Function). The Pedagogical Function applies due to the content of bravery, admonishment, love, hope and courage in The Odyssey. Through the whole story, Odysseus stays true to his wife and continues to love them, and he never ceases his journey home no matter what falls in his path. He is not afraid of obstacles and he is constantly praying and giving thanks to the Gods and Goddesses he receives assistance from. This is an important life lesson, therefore it applies to the Pedagogical Function.
The first function, Mystical, applies because The Odyssey portrays the beauty and magic of the universe and all the Gods and Goddesses believed to be in it. They all to incredible things and grant people happiness and misery when it is necessary. Hence the terrifying side of the universe.

  30. I think the odyssey is mostly sociological and mystical. I think its mystical because its myths cause there is like gods and things. I think its sociological because it shows the social life's of the gods and because most events happen in some order.

    ReplyDelete
  31. the first function means about how the world functions in mysterious ways. the second one is how nature works. the 3rd supports social order. the 4th one is how live good, and be happy. that what i think they mean.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that the Odyssey is mystical and sociological. I think it is mystical because it shows the power of the Gods. It shows that Poseidon has the power to keep Odysseus from getting home. Everything it says and shows about the gods supports the mystical function. I think it is sociological because it supports Odysseus's ranking in his social class. Every one he and his son have met on the way are pretty high up and respected. They never show or say anything about him being with lower class because that is not the class he is in.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think that the Odyssey is a Mystical function and a Sociological function because this book is mostly talking about a certain social order. Plus its a myth to some people. It supports the validates of the gods. There are some things that could back up with them. It is a myth because they are still told till this day.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think the Odyssey has mystical function and sociological. It is mythical because it has to do with the God's and Goddesses and of course they are not real. So basically the whole story is a myth because it is based around the gods and goddesses. I also picked sociological because the story has been told in a certain order each time it has been told. If the order the story had been told has been the same each time. This also comes in affect because every time Odysseus meets a new person, they are ranked in his social class. There are not any people lower than he is that he associates with.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that the odyssey shows mystical & sociological. I say mystical because of all the myths the gods believed in and also all the creatures they have made. I say the sociological because it talks about gods social lives and have the gods stories told where all other stories tied into each other somehow.

  36. There are four functions of mythology. In the Odyssey I think the 2 that come into play the most would be mystical and pedagogical. Mystical because odyssey is a story told by the great story teller Homer. This story traveled down his family for generations. Also I think it's pedagogical because I think Homer had a moral to his story. That Odyseus was such a grate man he was almost a god himself. Maybe Homers moral was that if you work hard enough to get something and you try and you perserver any thing can happen. So to always try your best and good things will come your way. That why I think the odyssey represents the mystical and pedagogical functions of mythology.

In my own, personal opinion, I think that the Odyssey lays in the functions of Cosmological and Sociological. I came to this conclusion because the definition to Cosmological Function is 'stories that attempt to explain the process of nature.' Well, it is quite obvious that the Odyssey does in fact explain why nature acts like it does in there eyes, and through the eyes of the Gods. Let me explain. The Greeks believe that the reason things happen like they do is because of a certain God, considering that in Greek religion, every god has something they control. And the Greeks believe that everything that the Gods do to nature has a reason, such as happiness, sorrow, hatred, or in the Odyssey's case, revenge. Poseidon, God of the seas and other bodies of water, (often referred to as "The Earth Shaker" in this epic poem) wants revenge on Odysseus for killing his son, not praising him for the Trojan horse, and for some other reason I am unaware of at this moment. And because of the hatred and revenge that Poseidon feels for Odysseus, Poseidon is trying to kill Odysseus and taste that sweet taste of revenge, hence the reason Poseidon keeps making the earth shake and making ocean storms. Also, the Sociological function, because, obviously, people talk ALOT in this poem, hence the reason it is so long. Here's an example: When Odysseus was on the kings ship (chapter 8-9) I noticed that alot of people knew about the Journey. Hence the word SOCIAL.

  38. I think that the two functions that protein to the Odyssey would be the Pedagogical function and the Mystical functions. The Pedagogical function is really the one the most in the story to me. Sometimes they teach us life leasons. WHen the gods are fighting with each other and that tells us that we have what he e\have. Then in myatical functon would be all the myths that are in the book

    ReplyDelete
  39. I believe the two functions that are most prominent, in the epic poem "The Odyssey", sociological and cosmological. The only reason the poem is supported by the sociological function is because the gods are above humans or mortals meaning the gods have power over the humans. The gods can either help or hurt mortals. Poseidon hurt Odysseus by keeping him from his family of Telemachus and Penelope. One example from the text supported by the function of cosmological is how Poseidon controls the water and the earth. This means that Poseidon controls some of the forces of nature.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think that the book uses Mystical the best. I say this because the Greek Gods dont control what we do and how we do it. They cant keep someone from going home to see their wife.

I think the story also uses Cosmological. This is because the story tells about nature and the gods that control nature. The story is mostly outside or on the sea.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The odyssey uses the mystical and cosmological functions. This book used the mystical function because the gods are mostly a myth and that makes the story partly a myth too. The cosmological funtion is used because some of the gods are in the old testament of the bible and some of the gods had something to do with nature.
    Delbert

  42. I think the odyssey is mystical and sociological because it shows the power of the Gods. In a way in the odyssey they use their own view of the world Zeus is their god in sky because is animals the eagle, Poseidon is water and Hades is the realer of the under world. And I don’t know if gods could heart the mortals or find ways to hurt mortals. This means that Poseidon controls some of the forces of nature, as does Zeus and other gods of the different worlds or nature. Then all of the mythical stuff that there is in the books so its only folk tale. Matthew Finley

  43. In my opinion, two of the most noteworthy functions of mythology found in "The Odyssey" are the cosmological and pedagogical functions. I think "The Odyssey" has a cosmological function becuase of the numerous references towards the Gods. This type of function is about explaining nature, and why things happen in certain ways. This concept is shown in "The Odyssey" with the Gods' powers. For example, Odysseus made Poseidon very angry for blinding and taunting his Cyclops Son (Polyphemos). It was Poseidon's anger that caused Odysseus to experience stormy seas, and in turn, be unable to return home. Another example of this is the fortune of Odysseus. This story shows how Athena is granting Odysseus good fortune (via wisdom, strength, or cleverness), and explains how he is recieving good hospitality and luck along his ill-fated journey.
The second function of mythology in "The Odyssey" is a pedagogical function. A pedagogical function is a concept involving life lessons (like how to be happy, or how to love). Odysseus displays this while he is being held captive by Calypso after Troy. Even though Calypso is beautiful, and he has the chance to become immortal with her, Odysseus remains unhappy. He would rather return to his home and see his family. No matter what glorious gifts/opportunities he recieves, Odysseus turns them down for the opportunity to return to Ithaca (and be with his loved ones).
I think that all four mythology functions can be found in "The Odyssey". To me though, the cosmological and pedagogical functions are the most important!

  46. think that the Odyssey is mystical and sociological. I think it is mystical because it shows the power of the Gods. like when poisiden keeps odysues from going home. Socialogical because it talks about how when you get a guest treat them good and when your a guess you treat the host with respect.

  48. The Odyssey serves two of the four of Joseph Campbell's. These two are the mythological function and the cosmological function. This epic fulfills the mythological function because it tells the story of nmany awe-inspiring things such as tornadoes, and whirlpools. Also, it slightly shows the cosmological function because it explains the many gods and how they cause nature's wonders and events.
